Be aware that in Dubai the attitude to the observance of traffic rules is very strict, as in principle, and the attitude towards the observance of any other rules of public order. And everything is very strict indeed – no excuses, bribes or arguments will help you, they will only make things worse.
In general the traffic rules in the UAE are the same as in other countries, but there are some nuances that a tourist would do well to know before renting a car in Dubai and go to conquer the most beautiful city in the world.
THE PECULIARITIES OF THE DRIVING REGULATIONS IN DUBAI
One of the main features of roads in the UAE is a large number of traffic circles. Tourists who are not used to such traffic, it may be quite difficult to navigate in a dense stream of cars. It is important to adhere to the following rule: the advantage have those cars that move directly in a circle. This rule is accepted by default, so if you do not see any traffic signs at the intersection – stick to it. If there is a sign, then, of course, you must follow the prescription of this sign.
Speed limit when driving a car in the city – up to 60 km / h, on the highways – up to 100 km / h. This rule also applies by default, that is, even if there is no appropriate road sign nearby. Again, if there is a sign, you should stick to the limit indicated on it, e.g. 40 km/h.
The absence of policemen nearby does not mean that you can violate the rules with impunity – such a number will not work with you. All city roads and highways are equipped by numerous electronic radars, which fix speeding and take photos of the violator’s car. The information about the violation goes straight to the police database – and you’re hooked.
Also note that there is an “allowed speeding” of 20 km/h, so you do not have to be afraid of driving, for example, 101 km/h. If the speed limit is 100 km/h, the radars will only go off if you drive 120 km/h.
If you travel to Dubai by car for the first time we recommend to buy a laser disc with the information on all roads of the UAE or download a navigator with a detailed road map from the Internet. So you will find it easier to navigate in an unfamiliar area, you will be able to make and study any route before you go.
The driver and passengers must always wear seat belts while driving. Children under the age of 4 should only be transported in a car seat.
If you are standing at an intersection with yellow perimeter markings and you see a traffic jam on the other side, you must not drive, even if the traffic light is green for you, until the jam has “cleared up”.
Even though the UAE has right-hand traffic, drivers must pay attention to the obstruction on the left, not on the right, when driving. This nuance is often overlooked by tourists and can cause an accident. Therefore, be vigilant and do not forget about this unusual rule.
It is imperative to report even a minor accident to the police, otherwise you just do not get insurance – insurance companies pay compensation only on the basis of a police report. You should call 999 to report the accident – write it down just in case.
